چکیده

We found anomalies in the temperature dependence of the dielectric and the magnetic susceptibility of NaV 2 O 5 in the microwave and far infrared frequency ranges. The anomalies occur at the phase transition temperature T c , at which the spin gap opens. The real parts of the dielectric constants ǫ a and ǫ c decrease below T c. The decrease of ǫ a (except for the narrow region close to T c) is proportional to the intensity of the x-ray reflection appearing at T c. The dielectric constant anomaly can be explained by the zigzag charge ordering in the ab-plane appearing below T c. The anomaly of the microwave magnetic losses is probably related to the coupling between the spin and charge degrees of freedom in vanadium ladders.

A ug 1 99 8 Infrared study of spin - Peierls compound α ́ - NaV 2 O 5 ∗

Infrared reflectance of α´-NaV 2 O 5 single crystals in the frequency range from 50 cm −1 to 10000 cm −1 was studied for a, b and c-polarisations. In addition to phonon modes identification, for the a-polarised spectrum a broad continuum absorption in the range of 1D magnetic excitation energies was found. The strong near-IR absorption band at 0.8 eV shows a strong anisotropy with vanishing int...

Ja n 20 01 Charge - ordering phase transition and order - disorder effects in the Raman spectra of NaV

In the ac polarized Raman spectra of NaV 2 O 5 we have found anomalous phonon broadening, and an energy shift of the low-frequency mode as a function of the temperature. These effects are related to the breaking of translational symmetry, caused by electrical disorder that originates from the fluctuating nature of the V 4.5+ valence state of vanadium. The structural correlation length, obtained...

Charge ordering phase transition and order - disorder effects in the Raman spectra of NaV

In the ac polarized Raman spectra of NaV 2 O 5 we found anomalous phonon broadening and the energy shift as a function of the temperature, which we relate to the translational symmetry breaking effects caused by the strong electrical disorder due to the fluctuating nature of V 4.5+ valence state of vanadium. The structural correlation length, obtained from comparison between measured and calcul...

1 9 A ug 1 99 9 Ultrasound Investigations of Orbital Quadrupolar Ordering in UPd 3

For a high-quality single crystal of UPd3 we present the relevant elastic constants and ultrasonic attenuation data. In addition to the magnetic phase transition at T2 = 4.4±0.1K and the quadrupolar transition at T1 ∼ 6.8K, we find orbital ordering at T0 = 7.6±0.1K concomitant with a symmetry change from hexagonal to orthorhombic. A striking feature is the splitting of the phase transition at T...
